partial resurrection

January 13th, 2008

I have the jabber server and the misc components up and running.

quser should be available now.

The web side is extremely painful though. It requires java+tomcat, ick. This monstrosity needs to be redone in a sane manner. It was written for what was available at the time though. Does that make qunu legacy code?

Next step: get tomcat and jhb up and running, so I can then have chats working on the web site.

1. tomcat + jhb
2. django app
3. start working on migrating to a sane system!

slowly rising

This just an fyi. I am slowly putting qunu back together. Honestly, I should have had it done by now.

I will post some detailed info later. Maybe some status reports as they happen.

toasting wiki spam… mmmm crunchy

October 6th, 2007

I just went through the wiki and toasted all the wonderful spam that was there. It is a bit ridiculous. The bots are now creating user accounts to spam the site. Thanks to LinuxLefty the spam has been under control. However, its a lot of work to keep the wiki clean and we can’t expect him to keep it up. Are there any decent anti-spam solutions out there which don’t place a huge barrier to editing for new users?

Qunu wieder online

October 1st, 2007

Cheers,

Helmar

it’s alive! bwaaahahahahaha

October 1st, 2007

Finally, qunu is alive again. I just can’t believe it.

After shaving a herd of yaks, everything is sort of running as well as it was before. There are bound to be a few quirks here and there. If you find any, let us know.

Qunu will be back within days, thanks to new sponsors

September 29th, 2007

After 2 months of being offline due to high hosting expenses, we decided to make an effort to get Qunu back online at a cheaper facility, running on a single box, and find some sponsors to help us cover the expenses (after all, Qunu is a free service!)

Everything looks good for a launch sometime over the weekend or early next week!

Thanks to everyone who has been enquiring as to the status of the Qunu project. We really look forward to seeing you on the site soon. :)

Update on Qunu Translations

March 2nd, 2007

Tower of Babel Had a word with Murray (who had a word with Justin) this morning on my pet project: Qunu’s translations. Here’s an update.

Very much to our own dislike, we had to shelve the 16+ languages that our friendly Qunistas had generously translated for us. We wanted to get Qunu 2 out, but the translation part wasn’t ready, like other bits, including the feedback dialog and the profile editing page.

Previously the translations were done online in a really nifty ajax script that Murray had hacked up, then compiled into an XML file through yet another script, and made available using the old framework. This, however, didn’t work for all browsers, so some just choked on it.

With the new framework we couldn’t (but also didn’t want) to use this method anymore. What’s happening now is that for now the translations will be done on the Wiki, from where we’ll take the strings, run them through a script that then creates individual templates, and output them on the site. That’s nice and clean - fast and anybrowser-friendly.

You may ask what is going to happen with the strings we already have. Well, I for my part will make sure that as many strings as possible are taken over, so they don’t have to be redone. That said, the new site is rather different, so some duplication is unavoidable. I hope our friendly helpers out there don’t mind.

For now the status on translations is still ‘hold’ - I’ll keep you posted once we’ve set up the bits on our side and are ready to roll. In the meantime, our sincere thanks go to all the translators, especially those who had completed their translations on the alpha site, but who weren’t brought live by us. On that note, I’d like all translators to get in touch with me so that I can work with them on the new translation system.

PS: almost forgot. The good news is that the new site has far less strings to translate, so new languages should be coming in fast and furious once we’ve done our bit on the backend.

RSS feed in Deutsch wiederhergestellt

February 26th, 2007
